Pianist, composer, educator Pete Malinverni has been a fixture on the New York City Jazz scene since moving there in the early 1980’s. Pete has recorded sixteen times as a leader and has established performing, recording and inspirational contact with a host of masters including Joe Lovano, Vernel Fournier, Charles Davis, Mel Lewis, Dennis Irwin, Karrin Allyson, Steve Wilson and many, many others. Hammond B-3 organist Kyle Koehler grew up hearing and then playing with some of the jazz masters (Shirley Scott, Charles Earland, etc.). After receiving a degree in music performance and composition, Kyle moved to New York City in the late 90s, where he has made quite a name for himself. Besides leading his own trio, he has performed with some of the top names in jazz , Lou Donaldson, David 'Fathead' Newman, Bobby Watson and Jimmy Heath. He has been on numerous recordings and recently completed two tours of Japan, promoting his critically acclaimed CD "EXIT 13" with drummer Sylvia Cuenca and guitarist Dave Stryker. Kyle was voted as a "Rising Star" in the Downbeat Critics Poll. Please join us and welcome Mr Koehler to the UC stage at his debut as a leader! Called “a force on the rise” by JazzTimes magazine, Alison Shearer’s explosive career hits refresh on what it means to be a jazz saxophonist today. She leads a new generation of performers, inhabiting her individuality as a member of an international artistic community, and reconfiguring the identity of “jazz fusion” for our current moment. Alison gathered her eponymous Quartet, with Kevin Bernstein, keys, Marty Kenney, bass, and Horace Phillips, drums, in 2015. She writes most of the group’s music, and their soulful, groovy, melodic take on fusion found immediate acclaim in New York City, where they got their start. Adam Birnbaum is emerging as one of the top young voices in jazz piano. Since receiving a graduate Artist’s Diploma in jazz studies from The Julliard School in 2003, he has become a presence on the New York City scene as a leader and sideman, performing in such venues as the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Birdland, the Jazz Standard and Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. As a leader, Birnbaum has released four albums under his name in Japan and the U.S. He has performed or toured with established jazz artists such as Al Foster, Greg Osby, Regina Carter, The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, as well as with young artists such as Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and Cecile Mclorin Salvant. Adam is currently an Assistant Professor of Jazz at SUNY Purchase. He is also a Steinway Artist. Vibraphonist Tyler Blanton is becoming known as a new and identifiable voice on the instrument. With his distinctly lyrical and nuanced 4 mallet approach to the vibraphone, he has been praised as “an heir to the swinging and melodically charged throne of post-bop masters such as Gary Burton and Bobby Hutcherson.” A prolific composer, Blanton’s musical endeavors consistently involve top musicians in the New York music scene such as Donny McCaslin, Nate Wood, Ari Hoenig, Drew Gress, and Johnathan Blake, among others. For this special Sunday evening show you should expect an infectious array of Bossa Nova, Sambas, and selections from the great Brazilian songbook both familiar and lesser known.
